4 May 2006 - May Day Folk Dancing

May Day Folk Dancing At Dalton Park
Mr Coates reports:
Bank Holiday Monday saw Heighington School dancers celebrating the arrival of spring with enthusiasm. The weather was rather March - ish but this didn't dampen our eagerness nor freeze our footwork.
Ten old stagers from Year 6 and eight new comers from Year 5 proved that practice does make perfect with a display of folk dancing which entertained and delighted the crowds of shoppers at Dalton Park, a retail outlet near to Seaham.
Our programme began with Year 6 performing our Catalonian dance; La Bolengera without the hint of an error, followed by a mostly Year 5 side dancing the old favourite, The Waves of Tory with great vigour. By now we were warmed up and all the dancers were involved in The Hindley Street Dance from the North-West Morris Dance tradition. The set ended with six, rather nervous, Year 5 dancers giving the first ever performance of a Long Sword dance which ended with tremendous applause and smiles of relief.
After recharging our batteries in McDonalds (healthy option) we performed everything again, Year 6 this time dancing the Long Sword dance very confidently and finished the set off by sharing the dance floor with Black Sheep Morris from Barnard Castle in a lively handkerchief dance.
Lots of grateful thanks are due to: Christine and Hugh who played for us, Mrs. Goundry who supported the side throughout, Fiona Corner and Brenda Story who turned lunch-time mayhem into relaxed order and, finally, the many, many parents, grandparents, siblings and friends who, by their support and interest made our first "dance out" of 2006 such an enjoyable success.
Did I mention the children's behaviour? Impeccable!
