14 Jun 2006 - Year 6 at High Force Centre May 2006
On the weekend of 19-21 May 2006, a group of Year 6 children went to the High Force Centre where they experienced various emotions such as excitement, tension and fear.
Due to the weather at Ellerton Water, the entire schedule was reversed. The children that evening confronted some of their greatest fears as they faced a 30 foot high climbing wall and a wobbling pole. After a hearty meal, half of the children returned to the activities whilst the others remained indoors to tackle the egg rocket challenge. This interesting challenge to be successful required: teamwork, patience, imagination and organization. The fun in this challenge was that the rocket after it had been constructed was to be launched from catapult.
Saturday brought excitement and amazement to the children as they experienced the thrill of abseiling down a real rock-face and learnt how to find food, water and light a fire. One of the activities involved crossing a surging river. All of the children did this without difficulty. That night the half that was outside the previous night was in doing the rocket and the others resumed to the ropes course. During an evening meal of Shepherd?s Pie and Bangers and Mash everyone was joined by Mrs Goundry.
Kayaking, Canadian Canoeing and Rafting was what Sunday had in store along with emotions like fear, tension and nervousness. Fascination was also deep amongst the children and the teachers as they saw with their own eyes a purposely-sunken ship in the lake. The rafting was quite a challenge as the children had to build a raft that would first of all float and also hold at least 5 children in most groups it was 9 people.
The instructors have given the children maybe a once-in-a-life time experience, some new skills and even the opportunity to conquer some of their greatest fears.
