18 May 2006 - Further Tag Rugby Success
Postponed from March, Darlington Primary Schools' Tag Rugby Tournament was played in blustery conditions at Longfield Sports College on Thursday 18 May.
Heighington entered two mixed Year 6 teams which played in two of the four "pools". The boys and girls were confident we could play fast and effective rugby after hard work on our passing and running skills during PE lessons.
The "A" team had four pool games to play and began with an untidy scambled draw before deciding that extra communication was required.
In their five pool games our "B" team began disappointingly with two narrow defeats due largely to over-excitiment. Faces were long but great determination earned them a draw in their third game and with confidence restored they played attractive rugby to win the last two games. Sadly this wasn't quite sufficient to carry them through to the semi-final stage.
Meanwhile, the "A" team had co-operated well and shared the scoring to win three games in a row and progress in the competition. Their semi-final opponents were Alderman Leach Primary School who were overcome by a united team playing their best rugby of the afternoon.
In the final they met Mowden Primary School who succumbed to a very confident Heighington team who made few errors, closely supported the ball carrier and scored seven stylish tries to two in reply.
By the end of the afternoon it was clear that hard work during curriculum time and the extra expert coaching by the Rugby Development Officer had made a significant difference, particularly to the Heighington girls who were the most skillful, committed and involved female players at the festival.
Many thanks to those parents who supported the teams throughout the afternoon and who helped us with transport - no crowd trouble to report!
Congratulations to all who took part: Becky Burton, Emily Small, Ryan Bowes, Daniel Armstrong, Mary McAneney, Rebecca Henderson, Daniel Chambers, Owen Lowes, Emily Garner, Lucy Corner, Bradley Steele, Elliot Coatsworth, Josie Foster, Connor Lyon, Christopher Jones, Alexander Devlin and Daniel Miller.
