Heighington CE Primary School - About Us

Heighington CE Primary School is situated on the outskirts of the village.  It is a single storey building on a large attractive site with many managed environmental areas.

The school has a good reputation within the locality to the extent that some children travel from surrounding towns and villages to attend.  At present, we have about 250 children on roll.

The children are our school.  It is our sincere belief that the children should enjoy their primary education while at the same time achieving a high standard.  Of prime importance is the quality of education. The teaching and support staff are constantly updating their skills to deliver the best possible start to each child's education.  At least once a term parents are invited to meet the class teacher and receive a written report ant the end of each year.

The relationship between staff and children is one of mutual respect.  The children are taught that all people are important; that tolerance and understanding help everybody to work and play happily within the school community.  The standard of behaviour we achieve is very high through the consistent approach to discipline and the rewarding of good behaviour.

Music and sport are activitied that pass beyond the boundary of the School yet they are integral parts of our culture.  Children are encouraged to use their musical skills through concerts and assemblies.  Many children learn to play string or brass instruments through the peripatetic schools music service, while others are taught the recorder, penny whistle or ocarina by our own staff. We are proud of these achievements.

The children are offered the opportunity to develop sporting skills beyond those which can be taught as part of the PE curriculum.  Recently, football coaching, break dancing and country dancing have occupied many after school and for some years now, our school has enjoyed considerable success in inter-school athletics and swimming competitions.

As our name indicates, we are a Church school, and Rev. Dr. P Thomas, the parish vicar, is a regular and most welcome visitor. In the course of the year we hold several services in St. Michael's church in Heighington, and the children have contributed to the special displays and events held there.  We are proud of our strong links with the local community.

The over-riding ethos of our school can perhaps be summed up in our Statement of Aims.

We aim to:

  • be a friendly, welcoming and caring school, based on broadly Christian values.
  • develop a sense of personal and social responsibility, exemplified by our links with the community.
  • provide opportunities for spiritual, moral, social and cultural education, satisfying the needs of and providing equal opportunities for all.
  • provide for all staff to develop their personal expertise, professional skills and to achieve job fulfilment.
  • enable every child to achieve their full potential through a broad, balanced and interesting curriculum including the National Curriculum.
  • develop a co-operative working relationship between all children, staff, parents and governors.
  • direct the resources of the school to agreed priorities.
  • encourage and reward pupil achievement and good behaviour.
